Three weeks later when Charmaine was stabbed just after one O'clock one
Saturday morning at a dance in New Kingston, Queenie panicked and
decided to get rid of William. She located an old photograph of her
mother which she always kept and decided that it was as much an evil
omen as William was. On the back of the photograph she wrote 'William'
then she pushed it in the tope on his little head. She took him up and
rushed out.
The idea of abandoning him was prominent in her mind. At first she had
no idea how she would get rid of him. She had thought of leaving him in
somebody's arm under the pretext of going off for a short while on
urgent business. But she was afraid of being found out and of being
publicly accused of trying to abandon her child.
Then she thought of the ideal place where she could abandon the baby
and be certain that it would be taken care of. She caught a Jolly bus
and went to the Kingston Public Hospital. She arrived at the hospital
during visiting hours, left the baby in the bathroom of a ward and
fled. That was the last time she saw her baby.
Charmaine did not last the week. She died from the multiple stab wounds
she had received. Queenie did not go to the funeral. She kept the
apartment for a while then she sold Charmaine's things and left for
Montego Bay where she had heard the occupation was more profitable.
After ten years there she moved to Ocho Rios where she continued in the
occupation and was more or less a loner.
