Meet 11 year old Ruby Tahal. She's tall, very dark, and very pretty. She lives in the housing scheme known as Second Scheme with her grandmother, a sugar cake and salara vendor who is still of the colonial mentality that her granddaughter's dark complexion is a curse. Then there is 11 year old, fair skinned, well-off Fenton Little. He lives in the middle class neighborhood in New Street and is the envy and target of many of the other boys in class simply because his father "owns" Bookers, the largest store in town. Maxwell Richardson is also eleven and lives with his mother Vera, her boyfriend Dobidoo, teenaged cousin Yonette, and baby sister in one of the small houses in the backstreet of First Scheme. They all go to the same high school and are in the same class. Life is exciting and colorful until they all individually get in trouble and form an unusual alliance when they decide to remedy their situation.
